Kentucky House leaders appear poised to allow debate on a statewide smoke-free law on the chamber floor Thursday. The vote would represent a first for the legislation, which has been introduced and discussed in committee for the past five consecutive years without action.

A proposed statewide smoking ban at workplaces and public buildings has picked up bipartisan support in winning approval from a Kentucky House committee.  But the measure faces stiff resistance from some lawmakers in a state with historic ties to tobacco.

Hookah bar and lounge owners are expressing concern that the statewide anti-smoking ban under consideration by a state House committee would include their establishments. But it’s unlikely the legislation would pass the chamber in its current form.  

Advocates for a comprehensive statewide anti-smoking law are set to press the issue for the fifth year in a row during the 2015 legislative session.
