Top Seeded Louisville Stays Above The Upset Fray

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- No matter where he's coaching or who his team is facing, Rick Pitino has never liked playing the first game of the NCAA tournament as a top seed.

"Normally your guys get a little tight, say, `We're a 1 seed, uh-oh, we could lose this game,'" the Louisville coach said. "And you start playing not to lose rather than to win."

Look at fellow No. 1 Gonzaga, nearly leveled by little Southern out in the West Region. Or third-seeded New Mexico, which got schooled by Harvard.

Wildcats Get Another High-Ranking Recruit For Next Year

6'9" Power Forward Julius Randle announced Wednesday he will play for UK next year.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The number two ranked high school prospect in the country is joining the Kentucky Wildcats.  6’9” power forward Julius Randle picked UK over Kansas, Florida, and Texas. 

The senior from Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, TX, announced his decision at his high school just after 1pm.

A foot injury cost Randle much of his senior season, but he returned to lead his team to a state championship and will play in the McDonald’s All-American game in April.  

He joins a talented freshman recruiting class widely considered to be the best in the nation.

Robert Morris Upends Kentucky In NIT Opener

MOON, Pa. -- Mike McFadden hit two free throws with 8.7 seconds remaining and Robert Morris shocked defending national champion Kentucky 59-57 in the opening round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats decided not to call timeout after the second free throw but Kyle Wiltjer's 3-pointer before the buzzer bounced harmlessly off the rim, sending hundreds of students onto the court as Robert Morris ruined Kentucky coach John Calipari's homecoming.

Kentucky's Mathies Repeats As SEC Player Of The Year

ATLANTA -- The Southeastern Conference women's player of the year has found a home in the Bluegrass State.

 Kentucky guard A'dia Mathies was selected as the SEC's top player by The Associated Press for the second year in a row Tuesday - and ensured the Wildcats held on to the award for the fourth straight season.

Kentucky's Victoria Dunlap won in 2010 and 2011 before Mathies went back-to-back.

Kentucky Bounced From SEC Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Dai-Jon Parker scored 12 points, and the Vanderbilt Commodores beat Kentucky 64-48 Friday night in a rematch of last year's Southeastern Conference tournament championship and put a serious dent in the Wildcats' hopes of at least having a chance to defend their national title.

Kentucky Women Fall To Aggies In SEC Final

DULUTH, Ga. -- Kelsey Bone had 18 points and 15 rebounds, with most of her production coming in the second half, and Texas A&M beat Kentucky 75-67 on Sunday night to win the Southeastern Conference tournament championship in its first year in the league.

The Aggies, the No. 4 seed, were the surprise of the tournament by beating the top two seeds in the tournament. No. 19 Texas A&M (24-9) beat top-seeded Tennessee in the semifinals before beating No. 2 seed Kentucky (27-5) in the final.

Madison Central Beats Ballard 65-64 For Boys Title

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Ken-Jah Bosley hit a 3-pointer over two defenders with 2.2 seconds to play and Madison Central won its first Kentucky boys' Sweet 16 basketball state championship, 65-64 over Ballard on Sunday.

Bosley finished with 20 points, and his 14 in the fourth quarter kept the Indians (32-5) in the game when Ballard looked ready to pull away. Ballard's lead reached five points twice in the quarter, including after two Quentin Snider free throws with 49 seconds to play.

Kentucky Women Beat Georgia To Reach SEC Final

DULUTH, Ga. -- Jennifer O'Neill sank 3-pointers on each end of a 15-0 run early in the second half that gave Kentucky the lead, and the Wildcats rolled past Georgia 60-38 on Saturday night to earn a spot in the SEC tournament championship game.

DeNesha Stallworth had 18 points for No. 7 Kentucky (27-4), which will face No. 19 Texas A&M in Sunday night's final. The Wildcats, who lost to Tennessee in the 2010 and 2011 championship games, will play for their first championship since 1982.

UK Men Get Badly Needed Win Against Florida

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky faces a difficult road toward an NCAA tournament bid, but the Wildcats rallied past No. 11 Florida 61-57 Saturday to help their cause with the committee.

The Gators looked ready to hand a final blow to the Wildcats' postseason hopes after a 19-5 run provided a 57-50 lead with 7 1/2 minutes remaining. Kentucky responded by scoring the final 11 points of the game, boosting the Wildcats' NCAA prospects.
