Waiting For Liftoff: Kentucky Satellite Launch Delayed

By Brenna Angel / Chuck Mraz

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Ca. – Students from the University of Kentucky and Morehead State University are in California this week, waiting for the launch of a small space satellite that they helped build.

The students are part of Kentucky Space, a consortium involving the state's public universities and private industry. Kentucky Satellite-1 is a two-pound cube that will take orbit tomorrow with help from a NASA rocket.

Bob Twiggs, a member of Morehead's space science faculty, says the goal of the program is to get more young people interested in going into the aerospace industry.

"We think that the programs like these, which really excite the students and just gives them break experience, is building a future for our country in the kind of talent that we have to do things."

Kentucky Sat-1 took four years to develop. The launch was scheduled for 5:09 Wednesday morning, but was scrubbed due to a technical problem. It has been rescheduled for Thursday at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
