Two-Time Breeder's Cup Winner Miesque Euthanized

By Associated Press

Versailles, KY – Two-time Eclipse Award winner Miesque has been euthanized because of medical problems from advanced age. She was 27.

She was one of the top female runners and was put down Thursday at Lane's End Farm.

Miesque won the Breeders' Cup Mile in 1987 and 1988 for trainer Francois Boutin and jockey Freddie Head. Owned by Stavros Niarchos, Miesque won 12 of 16 lifetime starts and never finished outside the top three while earning more than $2 million in purses.

Miesque retired after the 1988 season and became a highly successful broodmare. Notable offspring include Kingmambo, who ran in Europe before becoming a leading sire at Lane's End upon retirement.

Miesque was buried in the cemetery at Land's End Farm.
