Stair Climb Continues To Raise Funds And Awareness

Lexington Residents joined firefighters downtown to raise money for the memorial monument.

We often think of pausing in memory for the men and women who have paid the ultimate price serving and protecting this nation.   But some choose to actively remember the fallen.  The Lexington Fraternal Order of Fire Fighters for example.  This weekend saw the third annual Climb for 9/11 fundraiser that raises money for their memorial monument.

Participants climb 78 flights of stairs at the Fifth Third Building on Main Street, ringing a bell when they finished.  Each participant climbs for a specific person who gave their life on that dark day, over a decade ago in New York.  President of the Order, John Durr, who has participated in climbs in various cities, says that it’s not about personal success.  “It’s not a race, it’s just an honoring thing.  It’s not to remember what a few people did that day on September 11th, it’s to remember what the hundreds of thousands did.”

The Order was hoping for 350 participants to match the over three hundred Firefighter’s lives that were lost that day, but were happy with the over 100 that did show up.  All of the money raised goes to maintain and preserve the Monument of the Fallen in Phoenix Park.  You can contribute by contacting your local Firehouse for details, or clicking on the link below.
