Ride-Sharing Services Raise Questions In Lexington

The rise of ride-sharing services in Lexington and the rest of the country has led to complaints from taxi services and some concerned lawmakers.

The company behind the cars with the pink mustaches – Lyft – launched in Lexington last April and has been allowing residents to catch a ride with other residents who’ve sign up to shuttle people around town. It’s all organized through a smartphone app.

But traditional taxi services say it’s model that could put a serious dent in their business and Urban County Council member Jennifer Mossotti told WKYT-TV the city has questions as well.

"We have to have the ability to provide our constituents with a safe ride and a safe atmosphere so there's going to be a lot of discussion about that in September," she said.

That’s when the city’s public safety commission is set to discuss the issue.

Lyft says background checks are required on all drivers and cars must pass an initial inspection.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
