A proposed statewide smoking ban at workplaces and public buildings has picked up bipartisan support in winning approval from a Kentucky House committee. But the measure faces stiff resistance from some lawmakers in a state with historic ties to tobacco.
Republican Sen. Ralph Alvarado, a doctor, told the House panel Thursday that exposure to secondhand smoke is a proven cause of heart disease and cancer.
He said it's an important health and workplace safety issue that the private sector hasn't solved.
The bill was advanced by the House Health and Welfare Committee.
Democratic Rep. Susan Westrom says she's confident her bill can pass the House if it comes up for a vote.
Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayer later said there's not much Senate support to pass a smoking ban.
