University of Kentucky President Dr. Eli Capilouto has announced Dr. Mark Newman as the next Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. Dr. Newman will replace Dr. Michael Karpf who is retiring after nearly 15-years at the University.
Dr. Newman is originally from Kentucky. He grew up in Owensboro and trained at Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville and served in the Air Force. He’s currently an anesthesiologist and president of Private Diagnostic Clinic, the physician practice plan for the Duke University Medical Center.
In a campus-wide e-mail sent out Friday morning, Dr. Capilouto said “Today’s announcement reflects the work of so many people, over so many years, to build a health care enterprise that serves our Commonwealth. As Dr. Karpf often said, we want to ensure that no Kentuckian has to wake up in the morning, concerned that they can’t receive the best of care close to home.” He added that Dr. Newman's background as a clinician-scientist, chairman, hospital leader and president of a large multi-specialty physician group, as well as his love for Kentucky give him unique insight and experience to lead UK's medical campus.
Dr. Newman officially begins at UK on October first.
