Frankfort, KY – Gov. Beshear says more than 53-thousand crashes, involving nearly 200 fatalities, occurred in Kentucky last year due to driver distractions, like text messaging. So Beshear is launching what he calls his Eyes on the Road initiative. "Banning state employees from text messaging while driving state-owned vehicles. Also included in this ban is emailing, instant messaging or engaging in any other form of electronic date retrieval or electronic data communication."

Beshear admits the ban will be hard to enforce, but says state workers caught ignoring the ban could face personnel action. Beshear says motorists who witness state workers texting while driving should report it. At least 18 states have banned texting while driving for all drivers.
