FRANKFORT, Ky. – Coalfield counties will be getting windfalls from the state totaling more than $600,000.
Gov. Steve Beshear said Monday that 31 county governments will get a portion of fees paid by coal companies to the Department for Natural Resources for mining permits.
Beshear said the money will be used for a variety of projects, including parks, playgrounds and water systems.
Ten of the counties will receive more than $23,000 each. Pike County is receiving the largest sum, nearly $100,000. Harlan County is picking up more than $86,000.
