Frankfort, KY – In 2007, Illinois educator Barbara Irwin was hired to replace Education Commissioner Gene Wilhoite, who moved to Washington. Irwin immediately resigned after questions were raised about her resume. Former lawmaker Jon Draud replaced Irwin, but he recently resigned for health reasons. Now, a third search is being launched. "It's a disappointment in some ways. It's a disappointment for example that Dr. Draud has serious health issues that he had to depart and the other things have happened. But that's par for the course."
State School Board Chairman Joe Brothers says the search won't be limited to Kentuckians. A Florida consulting firm is assisting in the search, which is expected to culminate by August 1st with the hiring of a new commissioner.
