Kentucky Derby Museum Hosting Jockey Exhibit

UKNow

The Kentucky Derby Museum is hosting an exhibit focusing on the life of Kentucky native jockey Isaac Burns Murpy, who won the race three times in the 19th century.  The traveling exhibit on Murphy will be on display at the Louisville museum until May 31st.

The museum says Murphy was the first black jockey to be enshrined in the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame.

Murphy's first Kentucky Derby victory came aboard Buchanan in 1884. He followed up with Derby victories in 1890 and 1891.

Murphy was born in Frankfort and raised in Lexington.

The exhibit is on display in the second floor Pollard Gallery at the museum next to Churchill Downs.
