Kentucky Blood Center Issues Urgent Call For Donors

The Kentucky Blood Center is putting out an urgent call for blood donations today ahead of another anticipated winter wallop.  Executive Director Martha Osborne said the weather has played havoc this week with blood collection efforts.

"As of Friday morning we have had to cancel more than fifty blood drives where we had hoped to have collected twelve hundred donations," Osborne told WUKY.

Osborne says with another winter storm bearing down on Kentucky this weekend the blood center needs to be busy especially Friday.

"We are normally open until six p.m. at our six sites today and then we have hours tomorrow as well.  We're hoping for big crowds during those times.  Given the weather situation, it's kind of hard to say we can extend the hours when we might wind up having to shut down and get staff home," Osborne said.

Type O as well as platelet donors are especially encouraged.    Additional information is at kybloodcenter.org.
