Kentucky Atty. Gen. Challenges Early Release Program

Frankfort, KY – Trying to reduce the state's burgeoning prison population, Kentucky lawmakers approved a provision giving prisoners credit for parole time, even if they violate parole and are sent back to prison. Applying the law retroactively, the state has released more than one thousand inmates. But a lawsuit filed by the attorney general challenges the releases and Governor Beshear welcomes the action. I think it's a good thing to get this issue decided on a statewide basis and so the attorney general's lawsuit will give us the opportunity to do that.

An injunction issued by a southern Kentucky judge already blocks the early release program in three counties. The lawsuit will allow the courts to decide the issue on a statewide basis.
