Lexington, KY – The University of Kentucky Art Museum has also employed a little, "horsepower" with its most recent exhibits, including a tribute to sporting artist Andre Pater, and the brand new "Hoofbeats and Heartbeats" which examines the role of the horse in American art, culture, and life; from the Revolutionary War to the twenty-first century. A groundbreaking collection spanning some two centuries, that guest curator Ingrid Cartwright says took four years to assemble.

The exhibit is broken up into 4 distinct themes, horses in battle, horses as a symbol of freedom, horses at work, and horses in sport and leisure.

Cartwright says the catalog reads like a veritable who's who of American painting and sculpture, including classic works by Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, Edward Troye, and others.

And with the World Equestrian Games coming soon, UK Art Museum Education Director Debra Borrowdale Cox, says Hoofbeats and Heartbeats has been designed for local, national, and international visitors.

Cartwright says she wants visitors to come away with a new appreciation for these extraordinary creatures, as well as those inspired by their power and beauty.

Hoofbeats and Heartbeats, The Horse in American Art runs through November 21st at the UK Art Museum.
