Hearing on Breeders' Cup Race Concludes

By Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A three-day hearing into the actions of Kentucky's top racing steward during last year's Breeders' Cup has ended, and the hearing officer denied a request to have the case dismissed.

Attorneys for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and steward John Veitch will file written closing arguments sometime in the next two months. Hearing officer Bob Layton will have up to 90 days afterward to make his recommendation on whether Veitch should be sanctioned.

The case stems from the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Churchill Downs in Louisville last November. Second-favorite Life At Ten finished last after her jockey, John Velazquez, commented on television beforehand that she was ``not warming up'' as usual.

The commission found in March that there was probable cause that Veitch violated rules by failing to enforce racing regulations.
