Lexington Mayor Jim Gray says his Senate campaign has raised $1.75 million in the first quarter.
Less than half of the total – about $750,000 – came from direct contributions while Gray himself has loaned $1 million to effort. Tuesday, the mayor said he’s optimistic as the campaign gears up to run against a high-profile Republican incumbent.
"I feel good about the race," he said. "Today what we're doing is putting our policies and positions out. I'm getting out in the community. I'm getting out around the state."
Gray is working to unseat Sen. Rand Paul, who dropped out of the Republican presidential race in early February.
The mayor is touting his record in Lexington and promising common sense solutions to Washington gridlock. Sen. Paul’s campaign has said the candidate “looks forward to putting his record and ideas up against anyone.”
