Confederate Time Capsule Found In Kentucky

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer

Construction crews have unearthed Confederate relics that had been buried in a time capsule under a Confederate monument near the University of Louisville.

Some of the relics found in the box Monday include a cigar lit by Confederate President Jefferson Davis and a likeness of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The box was found after Mayor Greg Fischer ordered that the memorial be removed. It had been buried under the monument for about 121 years. When the box was unearthed, it was waterlogged and covered in mud. Fischer says many of the items in the box have been destroyed.

Sarah Lindgren, the city's public art administrator, says the city will dry out and clean the items to see if they can be salvaged.
