Concrete Falls From Lexington Parking Garage

By WUKY Staff

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A downtown Lexington parking garage is closed today after a concrete panel fell from the Phoenix Garage Sunday evening. The garage, owned by the city, is located across from the Lexington Transit Center on Vine Street.

Officials aren't yet sure what caused the 28-foot-long piece of concrete to break away from the 2nd level. No one was hurt. Engineers will continue evaluating damage Monday.

Lexington parking garage manager Tom Wilson told the Herald-Leader that Phoenix Garage, like four other city parking structures, is inspected every four to five years. The Annex Garage is inspected more frequently.

A 22-year-old pregnant woman was killed in Lexington in 2006 when a pickup truck knocked down a concrete panel from the Chase Bank parking structure.
