Kentucky's newest congressman is being sworn into office in Washington, a year after losing a heartbreaking race for governor.
Republican James Comer will be sworn in Monday evening to fill the remainder of Ed Whitfield's term from Kentucky's 1st District.
Comer also won election last week to a full, two-year term that begins next year.
Comer says his priorities include cutting the budget deficit, securing the nation's borders and expanding job growth.
The former Kentucky agriculture commissioner will be joined by family and friends at his swearing in. The group will include some of his former colleagues from the Kentucky legislature and the state Agriculture Department.
In 2015, Comer lost to Matt Bevin by 83 votes for the Republican nomination for governor. Bevin went on to defeat Democrat Jack Conway.
