City Extends Window For Football Signups
More kids will have the option of signing up for Lexington’s youth football and cheerleading programs thanks to expanded registration.
Former NFL and UK football player turned Lexington Parks and recreation coach Cornell Burbage was on hand at Douglas Park Tuesday to announce the changes - and had nothing but praise for the city’s football program.
"This is one of the programs that really got me started on my whole journey. And that's what I always tell kids. It's starts here," he said.
Online and walk-in registration for football and cheerleading ages 7-12 has been extended through August 22. Registration sessions will be held at Douglas, Constitution, Idle Hour, Martin Luther King, Shillito, and Southland parks starting August 9.
And though he’s now aged out of the program, 13-year-old Taylon Taylor says he’s happy to see the window staying open for potential sign-ups.
"I just love Douglas Park and the football team," he says, adding that he wishes more kids his age were getting outside and being active.
About 400 youth participated in the Parks and Rec football program in 2013.
