A digital database has been compiled listing soldiers who died, were wounded or went missing during the largest Civil War battle in Kentucky.
The database of more than 5,800 soldiers from the Battle of Perryville provides details such as rank, unit, and any known burial site. It was put together with the help of Centre College students. Centre professor Christine Shannon says the project is constantly evolving.
"This was a good experience for the students. I think it made a contribution to the Perryville project, but it's just not finished. It will be an ongoing project, I'm sure for Mr. Holman and the other folks there," Shannon told WUKY.
Kurt Holman, manager of the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, has spent 30 years collecting names and details of the casualties. He contacted Centre College in Danville for assistance, and a computer science class taught by Shannon took on the project.
The current database has 5,813 names. More research is needed to account for all 7,607 soldiers who died, were wounded or went missing.
