Boston Pops to Play Rupp Arena

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The music of one of the most beloved orchestra's in the world will fill Rupp Arena for a night of celebration and fundraising. Officials with the Boston Pops, Keeneland, and the University of Kentucky are teaming up for a concert scheduled for next October. John Nardolillo is director of the UK Symphony Orchestra, which will also participate in the event.

"Keith Lockhart will conduct the University of Kentucky orchestra and the Boston Pops, and then they'll do a combined side-by-side performance. We'll have guest artists, we'll have music that's typical of the Pops like "Stars and Stripes Forever" but also music that's celebrating Keeneland, so some music of the horse-type of stuff."

The Boston Pops concert will be a tribute to Keeneland's 75th anniversary. Proceeds from the event will benefit the UK orchestra's outreach endowment program, which allows for School of Music performances in communities across Kentucky.

Dennis Alves, the Boston Pops' director of artistic programming, says musical pieces up for consideration all have a horse theme, including "William Tell Overture" and even the theme song from Mr. Ed.

"The Boston Pops, we pride ourselves in the fact that we play all kinds of music. Not just classical, but we play popular, we play jazz, we play rock, we play everything. I can't tell you specifically, but there will be a little bit of everything and probably some surprises as well."

The concert is scheduled for October 15, 2011.
