Are You Prepared?

September is National Preparedness Month and we have some tips to help you and your family prepare for an emergency.

There’s a saying in Kentucky that if you don’t like the weather, don’t worry, it will soon change.  Sometimes those changes in the bluegrass come in the form of rain, high-winds, tornadoes, snow and ice and Kentuckians are often left powerless, literally.  Cliff Feltham with Kentucky Utilities offers four proactive steps to prepare for the loss of power.  The first is to pack an emergency kit. “The flashlight industry has come up with a hand-cranked powered flashlight and they last a pretty long time once you’ve hand cranked them enough and provide enough light.  Batteries should be in there also, a hand cranked can opener, maybe some cash and a weather radio.”

Secondly, during an outage it’s important to stay informed either with the KU outage app, phone system or radio.  Thirdly, report downed lines to Kentucky Utilities and lastly, always assume down line is energized and stay away from it.
