Renovations are coming to one of the first projects funded through Lexington’s Office of Affordable Housing, and residents are praising the proposed improvements.
Ask Bernice Thomas what she thinks of the forthcoming facelift to her home of five years and she breaks into the theme from The Jeffersons.

And while it may not be a deluxe apartment in the sky just yet, workers will soon add a coat of fresh paint, energy-efficient upgrades, and a new roof to the 59 one-bedroom complex – all through a $400,000 grant from the city’s Affordable Housing Fund. A vigorous advocate for the fund, Vice Mayor Steve Kay told the press building new units isn’t always the answer.
"The work we're doing here, which is really to stabilize affordable housing, is as important as creating neww units," he said. "We need to make sure that the units we have stay affordable."
The Urban County Council allotted $3 million to get the Affordable Housing Fund off the ground, with another $2 million expected every year.
