1,800 IRS Jobs On The Chopping Block In Northern Kentucky

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service is consolidating processing facilities and closing a sprawling facility in northern Kentucky, meaning a loss of 1,800 jobs.

The Kentucky Enquirer reports the agency announced the cuts Wednesday. Some employees will remain in Covington at other facilities.

Leaders with the IRS's National Treasury Employees Union confirmed to the newspaper that the 450,000-square-foot processing complex on the river will close.

The IRS is Covington's second largest employer. Depending on the time of the year, the agency employs 3,500 to 5,000 in the riverfront complex.

City Manager Larry Klein said the change will have a big impact. He said the city wasn't notified in advance.

Despite that, Klein said the building lies on prime riverfront property, and the move will free up the property for redevelopment.
