Abuse Panel To Issue First Report This Year

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A panel appointed by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear to review cases of severe child abuse and neglect says it expects to issue its first report later this year.

The Child Fatality and Near Fatality External Review Panel began meeting last November after Beshear created it through an executive order.

Gruner Award for Meritorious Public Service in Journalism and the McClatchy President's Award for her work at Vida, as well as honors from the National Association of Hispanic Publications and the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Plevin grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and is a graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She is also a fluent Spanish speaker, a certified yoga teacher, and an avid rock-climber.

Strategy Could Give Grimes Shot At U-S Senate

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes could be a strong challenger in next year's U.S. Senate race if she runs as a Washington outsider against both Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and President Barack Obama.

University of Kentucky political scientist Ernie Yanarella said if Grimes decides to get into the race she will have to set herself apart from Obama, particularly on the coal industry that has proven so influential in Kentucky politics.

New Security System In the Works At UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky is implementing new security measures over the next several months in an effort to improve safety for students and workers.

Students received an email from the school this month outlining details of the plan and new policies that will go into effect over the next nine months.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe told WKYT-TV that the school is spending nearly $5 million on the project.
