Banker, Civic Leader Sam Barnes Dies

Samuel G. Barnes, Sr.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – Lexington has lost a civic leader. Fifth Third Bank President and CEO Samuel G. Barnes died Tuesday after he went swimming off the coast of Glynn County, Georgia. He was in Georgia for his son's upcoming wedding.

In a statement, Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry said the 64-year-old Barnes was a consummate gentleman.

Vice Mayor Gray Discusses Preservation - Smart Growth With BGT Group

Lexington, KY – Speaking Tuesday to members of the Bluegrass Trust for Historic Preservation, the construction executive says, if elected, he would create a Commissioner-level position for Preservation, Planning, and Economic Innovation.

Mayor Newberry spoke to the same group last month. In a lengthy question and answer period the vice mayor was asked about everything from the need for more public green space, to the controversial design of a downtown CVS drugstore, and a church's planned use for the vacant Lexington Mall.

Instant Horse Racing Gets Approval From State Commission

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – It's not expanded gambling, but the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has voted in favor of a new type of wagering that it hopes will boost race purses at struggling Kentucky tracks.

The game is called instant racing: patrons place bets on old horse races that have been run all over the country. Names of the horses, jockeys, and trainers are hidden.

Beshear Applauds Instant Racing Decision

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – Gov. Steve Beshear is applauding the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's decision to pursue instant racing at horse tracks.

An instant racing bill failed to emerge from this year's General Assembly, but the commission believes the wagering game can be approved through the regulatory process. Gov. Beshear agrees.

Red Cross Providing Relief For Flood Ravaged Pike County

Lexington, KY – Winn Stephens says the Lexington office oversees some 8 community chapters, including the one at Big Sandy. Stephens says an emergency shelter has been opened at Pike Central High School.

"We had 29 people on Saturday night and 25 people there on Sunday night. We're just trying to make sure everybody has a safe place to sleep, they have some food, they have some clean water, they have the toiletry items they need, those kind of things."
