Kentucky Considers Ban On Caffeinated Energy Drinks

Frankfort, KY – The proposal comes on the heels of action by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to declare caffeine in alcoholic energy drinks an "unsafe food additive."
Republican state Rep. Danny Ford of Mount Vernon said Thursday he believes even nonalcoholic energy drinks could pose a health risk to children who drink them.

Lamb Turns In Lion-Like Performance In UK Win

Lexington, KY –
Doron Lamb broke the record of 31 set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991 against Georgia on a nifty layup that put the Wildcats up by 28 with 6:38 remaining. He walked off to a standing ovation moments later after making 11 of 12 field goals, including 7 of 8 3-pointers.

Brandon Knight shook off a banged up left knee to finish with 21 points and five rebounds as the Wildcats (9-2) breezed into the Christmas break with ease.

Gray Announces More Personnel Appointments

Lexington, KY – Jim Gray will be inaugurated as Lexington's next mayor January second. By then, he should have a full complement of assistant administrators in place.

Gray announced former general services commissioner Bob Ramsey will return to that position. Assistant Deputy Attorney General Janet Graham will head the law department. The mayor-elect also has teams of citizens looking at ways to improve city government.

White Christmas in KY?

Lexington, KY – Forecasters say there should be some snow on the ground Christmas morning in Kentucky, but the accumulations will be less than originally expected.

Louisville and Lexington are expected to get under two inches. National Weather Service meteorologist John Denman says the state's two largest cities may not even get an inch and northern Kentucky near Cincinnati may not get any snow.

KY Won't Lose Seats in Congress

Louisville, KY – Kentucky will neither gain nor lose a seat in Congress following the
2010 census.

Kentucky has six seats in the House. That number last changed after the
1990 census. The commonwealth previously had seven seats.

But while the number of seats won't change, the shape of the districts
may. Census Bureau director Robert Groves says information on population
shifts within states will be released next year.

Sate Approves Incentives For Speedway, Still Considering Ark Park

Frankfort, KY – On July 9th, the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta will host a 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup race. But to land the race, the track needed to expand seating capacity to 65,000.

To help fund the expansion, the track applied for state sales tax rebates, which have now been approved.

Based on an investment of $85 million, the track will receive more than $20 million in performance-based rebates over a 10-year period.

Beshear Shares Early Childhood Task Force Report

Frankfort, KY – Governor Beshear says the seeds of intellect are planted very early in children - earlier than elementary school or even kindergarten.

"People learn most rapidly during the first three years or so of their lives. That is not just development theory. That is biological fact."

Therefore, Beshear says Kentucky must do everything possible to prepare children for a better start in life.
