Kentucky Lawmaker Wants Drug Testing For Those On Assistance

Representative Lonnie Napier Is a Republican From Lancaster.

Frankfort, KY – Under the bill filed by state Rep. Lonnie Napier, R-Lancaster, those who fail the drug test would lose their benefits. They could get it back by passing a drug test at a later date determined by the state.

The proposal has the backing of House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, but critics say it would stigmatize welfare recipients and possibly harm their innocent children.

Rogers Calls On Kentucky Lawmakers To Strengthen Meth Law

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, founder of the anti-drug task force Operation UNITE, said a proposal pending in the Kentucky General Assembly is crucial to curbing the state's meth problem. The proposal, similar to laws already in place in at least two states, would restrict sales of medications containing pseudoephedrine, which is the key ingredient in meth.

School District Buying Bicycles for P.E. Classes

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Elementary students in Lexington will soon have a new way to get active at school thanks to a grant from the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission. Nearly $21,000 was awarded to Fayette County Public Schools for the purchase of 70 bicycles.

Practical living specialist Betty White says a major component of the program will be learning about helmets and rules of the road.

UK Police Determine Campus Robbery Didn't Happen

Lexington, KY – University of Kentucky Police canceled a campus alert after they determined an early morning robbery on Friday never happened. The victim had reported to police that he was in the "blue" lot at Commonwealth Stadium near the bus shelter when he was approached by two white males wearing camouflage jackets who then beat him up and robbed him of medicine. UK Police Chief Joe Monroe says in the course of their investigation, including interviewing the alleged victim, they concluded his story didn't add up.

Randall Cobb Leaving UK Early To Enter NFL Draft

Lexington, KY – Kentucky All-American Randall Cobb has announced he will forego his senior season at UK and declare himself eligible for the NFL draft in April. In a sometimes emotional press conference on Thursday, the Alcoa native says he thinks he's ready to take his talents to the next level.

"This decision has been weighing on me for awhile. And, as hard as it was, I had to make the best decision for me and felt that it was my time to go and pursue my dream of playing in the NFL."

Acclaimed Actor's One Man Play Headlines MLK Day Events

Lexington, KY – On Monday, Lexington will pay tribute to the life and legacy of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King. Chester Grundy, one of the chief organizers of the festivities, provides a preview of this year's MLK Holiday celebration. Mr. Grundy is also the director of the Martin Luther King Junior Cultural Center at the University of Kentucky.
