Rollins Resigns Legislative Seat, Takes New Job

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A Democratic state representative from Midway has resigned to accept the top job at the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

Carl Rollins, chairman of the House Education Committee, submitted his letter of resignation to Gov. Steve Beshear on Wednesday.

Legislative Research Commission Executive Director Bobby Sherman had notified lawmakers of Rollins resignation in an email. Sherman said the resignation would be effective at the close of business Wednesday.

Injured Kentucky Forward Looks Ahead To NBA Draft

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Nerlens Noel continues to take small steps toward returning to the court following surgery on his left knee.

He's shed his crutches and exercising without a knee brace. Though he wouldn't specify want types of exercises, it's all all signs his recovery is ahead of schedule - and each stride is important with the NBA draft looming.

Hansi Lo Wang is a reporter covering race, ethnicity, and culture for NPR's new Code Switch team.

Based in Washington, D.C., he previously served as a production assistant for NPR's Weekend Edition and was awarded the NPR Kroc Fellowship, during which he reported for NPR's National Desk and Seattle public radio station KUOW.

A Philadelphia native, Wang founded a radio reporting program for high school students in Philadelphia's Chinatown in 2008. He has also worked as a refugee housing coordinator.

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from Swarthmore College. As a student, he hosted, produced, and reported for a weekly, student-run program on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a native Chinese speaker of both Mandarin and Cantonese dialects.

Richie Havens, Folk Singer Who Opened Woodstock, Has Died... by: Tom Cole

Richie Havens, a Brooklyn-born singer who sang gospel as a teenager, began playing folk music in Greenwich Village clubs in the 1960s and was the opening act at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair in 1969, died Monday of a heart attack at his home in Jersey City, N.J., according to his agent. He was 72 years old.

State's Largest School District Approves Resolution To Raise Dropout Age

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Jefferson County Board of Education has voted in favor of a resolution calling for an increase in the dropout age.

The Courier-Journal reports the board voted on the measure that supports raising the dropout age to 18 despite concerns from member Linda Duncan that it wouldn't "cure out-of-control kids and keep them in school."

A formal vote on the issue won't come until July, and the policy wouldn't go into effect until the 2015-16 school year.
