Beshear Launches "Smart Government" Initiative

Frankfort, KY – Calling it his "Smart Government" policy, Gov. Beshear says the initiative expands on efficiencies instituted during his first two years in office. For one thing, Beshear says the ten percent pay cut he agreed to last year will continue this year. "And again, Lt. Gov. Mongiardo and several members of my closest circle of advisors are joining me. But this year, we will also be joined by the secretaries of my cabinet."

Lexington's Carnegie Center Wins National Design / Space Awards

Lexington, KY – The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington received $10,000 as part of the competitive 2009 MetLife Innovative Space Awards.
It was one of six groups nationwide recognized by the MetLife Foundation and Leveraging Investments in Creativity, an organization aimed at improving conditions for artists.

The center is in the former Lexington Public Library and offers programming for professional writers and activities to improve literacy levels.

Amanda's Bill Passes House Moves To Senate

Frankfort, KY – Surrendering his gavel to speak from the House floor, Speaker Greg Stumbo says it took the tragedy of 9-1-1 to show us that the nation's defense systems can be breached. "It took the tragedies of this last 9-1-1 to show us that there is technology available and a system that we can get in place in Kentucky to provide that extra level of protection in these very, very, very severe and serious cases."

UK Gets Fed Dollars To Research Battery Tech.

Lexington, KY – It'll fund a 36 thousand square foot structure where scientists will also do biomass and biofuels research. The project at the Spindletop Research site includes a three million dollar state investment. Work at the Kentucky-Argonne National Battery Manufacturing Research and Development center focuses on plug in hybrid vehicles. The new lab should be on line by the fall of 2011.

Millions Of Fed Education Dollars On The Line

Frankfort, KY – The House voted 96-0 for legislation allowing Kentucky to compete for up to 245-million dollars in federal funds to help rescue persistently, low-achieving schools. But Republican Rep. Brad Montell fears Kentucky may be at a disadvantage, because the state's application doesn't include charter schools. "I would submit to you since we're one of the ten states that doesn't even allow charter schools in our state, then we are certainly at a competitive disadvantage."

Senate President Williams Says No Gambling Bill Will Pass This Session

Frankfort, KY – As yet, no expanded gambling bills have been filed, except for a constitutional amendment requiring a vote by the people. But that's not keeping the topic off the table. It dominated the first weekly news conference by Senate President David Williams and House Speaker Greg Stumbo. And Williams made this bold prediction. "There's not going to be a gambling bill passed this session of the General Assembly."
