Texting While Driving Could Soon Be Banned

Frankfort, KY – Late last year, Gov. Steve Beshear issued an executive order banning state workers from texting while driving government vehicles. Beshear says distracted driving annually claims more than 200 lives in Kentucky, and his Eyes on the Road initiative can save lives.

Threatening Winter Weather Chases Lawmakers Out of Frankfort

Frankfort, KY – With a winter storm fast approaching the commonwealth, Kentucky lawmakers aren't taking any chances. Legislative leaders are calling it a week, and sending everyone home. House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins says it's the safe thing to do. "We don't know yet exactly how much snow we're gonna to get, but we do know the pattern of this storm, if it moves a little bit further north, could be very devastating to Kentucky."

State Senate Taking Up "Accountability in Government" Bill

Frankfort, KY – Sponsor, Damon Thayer says internet information would include the type of expenditure, the amount and the name of the person who requested the purchase.

Under the bill, the information must be available on line by January of next year. Kentucky's public universities must make financial data available to the state so it too can be posted on the internet.

State Lawmakers Continue To Debate Over Food's Role In Prison Riot

Frankfort, KY – Rep. Brent Yonts believes lousy food was the primary cause of last year's riot at Northpoint Training Center near Danville. Yonts believes the state, not private vendors like Aramark, can do a better job of feeding thousands of state inmates. "There's money being made on this contract, or there wouldn't be a contract here. The inmates are the ones who are starving."

Filing Deadline Passes For Next Election

Frankfort, KY – There were no last minute filers, but Sen. Jimmy Higdon of Lebanon, who was elected last month to fill an un-expired term, was waiting around to see if he would have any opposition for a full term. He doesn't. Newberry Delivers Upbeat Assessment of Progress & Potential In State of Merged Government Address

Lexington, KY – In today's State of the Merged Government Address, Newberry said lots of progress has been made in the last twelve months and 2010 will be an important year in Lexington's history.

"I am confident that great opportunities unlimited opportunities exists for us if we simply take the lessons we will learn in 2010 and use them to propel Lexington forward."
