Fewer Highway Fatalities In KY In 2009

Frankfort, KY – To date, at least 757 people have been killed on Kentucky highways this year. Gov. Beshear says that's 39 fewer fatalities than reported at the same time last year. "The number of people killed on Kentucky roadways has declined in each of the last three years, and we're on track right now to make it four years in a row in 2009."

A Slightly Rosier Picture

Frankfort, KY – After spending three hours assessing state revenue receipts, the Consensus Forecasting Group is predicting a slight up-tick in tax collections. Chairman Larry Lynch says the economy's just looking better. "Maybe it's the Christmas spirit imbued in all of us that we all feel a little bit more optimistic now. The rates of decline of various things seem to be ebbing. And the national economy seems to be looking a little better. And that seems perhaps to be translating to Kentucky."

Tough Times, Tough Choices

Frankfort, KY – Bringing the informal hearing to order, House Speaker Greg Stumbo told colleagues the state's financial situation is the worst he's seen in his 30 years with the General Assembly. But Stumbo's confident the state will cope.

"Kentucky has actually managed fairly well through this recession," says Stumbo.

OMG! No More Texting In State Vehicles

Frankfort, KY – Gov. Beshear says more than 53-thousand crashes, involving nearly 200 fatalities, occurred in Kentucky last year due to driver distractions, like text messaging. So Beshear is launching what he calls his Eyes on the Road initiative. "Banning state employees from text messaging while driving state-owned vehicles. Also included in this ban is emailing, instant messaging or engaging in any other form of electronic date retrieval or electronic data communication."

Former KY Secy Of State Drex Davis Passes Away

Frankfort, KY – Back when Democrats were in firm control of state government, Drex Davis was known for his ability to hop between the offices of State Treasurer and Secretary of State.

Between 1971 and 1987, Davis served in one office or the other, without interruption. In 24 years of running for political office, he lost only once - a 1967 primary race for Secretary of State.

Santa Driving More Than A Sleigh This Year

Lexington, KY – Lextran Community Outreach spokesperson Jill Barnett says look closely. She says, "passengers will see some festive drivers for their Lextran buses, and Santa Claus may be driving the bus and if that's the case, all passengers ride for free." Lextran will also provide free shuttle service to Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park on Tuesday December 22. Just be at the transit center at 7.
