The Lexington panel included Good Foods Co-op co-founder Jim Embry, Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation President Kris Kimmel, and Bill Cloyd, founder of Newton's Attic, an educational non-profit that teaches kids physics and engineering principles in a fun way.

New Wetlands Project Dedicated At McConnell Springs

Lexington, KY – A half million dollar environmental initiative highlighted during Earth Week captures dirty stormwater from surrounding industrial sites, then filters it naturally, so it
flows cleanly downstream. McConnell Springs Naturalist Laurie
Thomas says she hopes the wetlands project becomes a good environmental teaching tool for visitors. McConnell Springs, once an industrial waste site, is thought to be the birthplace of Lexington.

Appliance Rebate Money Going Fast

Louisville, Ky. -- – Kentucky state government has begun processing applications for an appliance
rebate program funded with federal stimulus money.

The state received about $4 million to offer in rebates to residents who
purchase various Energy Star certified appliances.

State Capital Buildings Getting Energy Upgrades

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – As Kentucky prepares to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on Thursday, Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear are touting energy conservation efforts at the State Capitol.

"We announced our intent to reduce the energy consumption at the Governor's Mansion by 15% by the end of 2010, and 30% by the end of 2014. I'm pleased to say that with the full implementation of the Energy Savings Performance Contract, we will achieve that first energy savings benchmark," said Mrs. Beshear.

Ky. Hospitals Testing Electronic Information Network

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – One day soon, you may be able to be admitted to a Kentucky hospital without having to fill out reams of paperwork on your medical history. The information will already be available on a secure, electronic information network.

That's the goal of the Kentucky Health Information Exchange, which currently has six pilot hospitals and one clinic participating.

Lexington Boy Dies of Gunshot Wound

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – A nine-year-old Lexington boy has died after being shot in the head. The Fayette County Coroner's office identified the victim as TaShawn Watson.

Police say he and a younger brother had found a gun in the family's garage Tuesday afternoon. The boys were playing with the gun when it accidentally fired.

Watson was a third grader at Cassidy Elementary.

Police say the boys' mother was home at the time of the shooting. The case is being investigated as an accident.
