Get City Emergency Alerts On Your Cell Phone

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lexington residents can now get city-issued emergency alerts on their cell phones. David Lucas, Director of Enhanced 9-1-1, says the service is called Lexington's Emergency Alerts and Notifications or LEAN system.

"These are not pre-canned notifications. Depending on what it might be, if it's a chemical spill or an AMBER Alert, we will actually give a message specific to that event."

KSP to Graduate New Troopers, Force Remains Understaffed

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Soon, there will be 63 new Kentucky State Police Troopers patrolling the commonwealth's highways. Graduation ceremonies for this year's cadet class are set for Friday in Frankfort.

KSP Academy Commander, Captain Phil Crumpton, says the cadets have successfully completed an intensive training program.

Execution Still On Hold

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Supreme Court is still weighing a request to lift a stay of execution for Death Row inmate Gregory Wilson. The stay, issued by Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd, is preventing the state from executing Wilson. The lethal injection procedure was scheduled for Thursday September 16.

Attorney General Jack Conway is appealing the stay. Gov. Steve Beshear is closely monitoring the proceedings, but says the state is prepared to carry out the death sentence if the court's refuse to block it.

Muhammad Ali To Participate in WEG Opening Ceremonies

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Champ is coming to the World Equestrian Games. Organizers announced this afternoon that Kentucky native and boxing legend Muhammad Ali will be part of the games' opening ceremonies.

Greg Roberts, CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, says the Ali's have a strong relationship with title sponsor Alltech.

WEG Horses Flying In

FLORENCE, Ky. – Three-quarters of the estimated 800 horses from 62 countries competing in the World Equestrian Games begin arriving at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Airport today. Rusty Ford, Equine Programs Manager for the Kentucky State Veterinarian's Office, says the horses must first be medically cleared before being transported to the Kentucky Horse Park.

Board Approves Big Boost to Todd's Salary

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The outgoing president of the University of Kentucky will be getting a sizable pay increase for both the last and the present academic year.

UK Trustees on Tuesday voted to award Lee Todd a $157,000 annual raise. The package also includes a potential $50,000 bonus for Todd, which the president has indicated he will not accept.

Small Fire Causes Injury at Kentucky State Reformatory

LAGRANGE, Ky. – The Kentucky Department of Corrections is investigating a small, smoky fire that was discovered at the Kentucky State Reformatory at LaGrange.

A news release from the department said the fire was found at about 7 p.m. Monday in a dormitory bathroom at the prison, but didn't cause any structural damage.

There are 218 inmates in the unit.

The only reported injury was to a sergeant who was treated for smoke inhalation.

Wellington Top Candidate For New School Name

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A naming committee for the new elementary school being built on Keithshire Way in Lexington says the school should be called Wellington Elementary.

The Herald-Leader reports that Principal Meribeth Gaines issued the recommendation to the Fayette County Board of Education Monday night, citing the school's proximity to the Wellington neighborhood and Wellington Park.

The naming committee reviewed about 180 suggestions for the school, which is scheduled to open in the fall of next year.
