Eastern Kentucky Strugging To Get Enough Census Takers

Richmond, KY – Higher pay may be the answer to finding more census takers for eastern Kentucky. The Census Bureau is increasing the salary for workers in the region by three dollars an hour; from $10.75 to $13.75 per hour.

Bureau spokesman Clay Barbour says about four-thousand census workers are needed in the Somerset region, which covers 24 counties in southeastern Kentucky.

Nunn Ruled "Competent" To Stand Trial

Lexington, KY – A Fayette circuit judge has ruled former state lawmaker Steve Nunn competent to stand trial for murder. The ruling by circuit judge Pamela Goodwine came at the conclusion of a hearing in Lexington. Nunn is accused in the shooting death of former state employee Amanda Ross outside her Lexington apartment. No trial date has been set for the case. Nunn did not appear at the hearing.

Olympians Encouraging Middle Schoolers To Get Fit

Olympian Tyson Gay walked with students outside Beaumont Middle School to kick off the 2010 World Fit program.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – Two Lexington middle schools are part of a nationwide pilot project to increase childhood fitness. Gold medal diver Micki King and sprinter Tyson Gay are supporting the World Fit: Olympians for Worldwide Fitness program.

"The beauty of it is its simplicity and its sustainability," King said. "We're not trying to make Olympians here. We have one goal: get gets outside and moving."

Berea Mayor's Salary Could Double

BEREA, Ky. -- – A small central Kentucky city could soon double its mayor's salary. The Berea city council will consider an ordinance proposal Tuesday that would increase the mayor's salary from $12,000 dollars to $24,000 dollars a year.

But Berea Mayor Steve Connelly says the boost in pay is unnecessary.

UK Holding Auditions for "Grand Night"

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – Some of the best singers in Lexington will belt out their favorite Broadway or pop song this week as the UK Operate Theatre holds auditions for its 18th annual "It's a Grand Night For Singing." The musical revue will run for six days in June at the Singletary Center.

UK Professor Emeritus Dr. Jim Rodgers says everything about the production is centered around the auditions.

Nunn Competency Hearing

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – A court hearing to review the mental competency of Steve Nunn is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Lexington.

Nunn is the former state lawmaker accused of killing his ex-fiancee, 29-year-old Amanda Ross. He has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.

A judge ordered Nunn to undergo a mental evaluation to determine whether he is competent to assist in his own defense. Nunn is expected to join the 1:30 PM competency hearing by phone.
