Beshear and Scott Talk Prescription Drug Problem in Washington

WASHINGTON – Prescription drug abuse was the focus of a congressional hearing in Washington Thursday. Florida Governor Rick Scott and Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear sat side by side before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

They both agree prescription drug abuse is an epidemic. But Governor Scott isn't sold on the effectiveness of statewide databases that monitor the flow of painkillers. His main concern is privacy.

Governor, First Lady Urge Kentuckians to Become Organ Donors

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – Gov. Steve Beshear is urging Kentuckians to become organ donors. In a ceremony at the State Capitol Wednesday, Beshear thanked circuit court clerks, who have been actively promoting organ donation since 1992.

"All of us have a wonderful opportunity to make a huge difference by deciding to donate our organs and tissue, after we die, to others who need them. There's no doubt that science and medicine together can work miracles. And we can become a part of those miracles," says Beshear.

Kentucky Soldier Fatally Wounded in Afghanistan

FORT THOMAS, Ky. – A northern Kentucky soldier has died of wounds suffered in fighting in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Wednesday that 21-year-old Pvt. Brandon T. Pickering of Fort Thomas died Sunday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany of wounds suffered two days earlier.

The military says Pickering was wounded when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire and a rocket-propelled grenade in Wardak province.

Paper Company Announces Expansion in Harrodsburg

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Dozens of new jobs are coming to Harrodsburg. Wausau Paper announced Wednesday it
will undergo a major expansion at its central Kentucky facility in Mercer County.

The company says the $220 million investment will create 76 new jobs. Wausau Paper already employs nearly 400 people in the Commonwealth.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved Wausau Paper for tax incentives up to $6 million.

Santiva Early Favorite in Blue Grass Stakes

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The field is set for this weekend's $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

At the post position draw Wednesday, oddsmaker Mike Battaglia picked Santiva as the 3-1 favorite.

"It wasn't easy. I kept looking and I went through this; this took a long time," says Battaglia.

Santiva will break from the number three position with jockey Julien Leparoux. Trainer Eddie Kenneally thinks Santiva has a good chance in the 1 1/8 mile race
