FRANKFORT, Ky.— Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is calling on Congress to pass legislation to ease federal regulations on coal mining.  He wants Congress to pass a bill he’s dubbed the Saving Coal Jobs Act.

"The first part of the bill would prevent the EPA from regulating carbon on new and existing coal plants, the second would force the EPA to stop stalling on mining permits," McConnell said in a Senate Floor speech Thursday.

Beshear Asks EPA To Rethink Proposed Coal Regs

Jun 4, 2013

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Gov. Steve Beshear is calling for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to rethink proposed greenhouse gas regulations that he said would effectively ban new coal-fired power plants.

Beshear made the request in a letter to the EPA last week.

The Kentucky Democrat asked the EPA to drop the proposal that would require coal-fired power plants to meet the same emission standards as those that use natural gas or oil.
