UK Gets Grant To Improve Heat Shields For NASA

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A University of Kentucky assistant professor and a research team have received a $1 million grant from NASA to improve the heat shields for spacecraft as they enter the planet's atmosphere.

While he won't be spacewalking, Alexandre Martin told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the work will focus on ways to improve the spacecraft that make it to neighboring planets, such as Mars and Venus.

GE, UK To Work Together On Research

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- The University of Kentucky has reached an agreement with GE Appliances to collaborate on research aimed at producing innovations in the appliances business.

UK President Eli Capilouto joined GE Appliances executives to announce the collaboration Thursday at GE's Appliance Park in Louisville.

The agreement sets terms for the licensing and sharing of jointly developed innovations.

UK Trustees Approve Budget For Coming Year

LEXINGTON, Ky.-- University of Kentucky trustees on Tuesday approved a $2.7 billion spending plan for the coming year that includes merit-based pay raises for faculty and staff, more money for scholarships and the school's smallest tuition increase in more than a decade.

The spending blueprint for the fiscal year that begins July 1 amounts to an increase of 2.7 percent, or $71 million, over the budget for the current academic year.

UK Trustees Set To Approve Budget For Coming Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Kentucky trustees are set to approve a spending plan for the coming year. The proposed $2 billion-plus budget comes before the trustees' finance committee Tuesday morning on the Lexington campus.

The full board of trustees is scheduled to vote on the budget later in the day.

New Security System In the Works At UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky is implementing new security measures over the next several months in an effort to improve safety for students and workers.

Students received an email from the school this month outlining details of the plan and new policies that will go into effect over the next nine months.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe told WKYT-TV that the school is spending nearly $5 million on the project.

Kentucky Beef Network to Manage UK's Eden Shale Farm

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A University of Kentucky farm that’s been out of operation for more than a year will soon be put to use by the Kentucky Beef Network for cattle demonstrations. The UK Board of Trustees recently approved the three-year collaboration for Eden Shale Farm, a 960-acre property in Owen County.
