Smith, Chapman Top List Of UK Athletic HOF Inductees

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame has announced the six people who will make up the 2013 class of inductees, including men's basketball's Rex Chapman and Tubby Smith.

They will be joined by 1980s football player Oliver Barnett, 1980s women's basketball standout Leslie Nichols, All-American track star and former coach Press Whelan (WHAY'-lan) and five-time all-American tennis player Jesse Witten, who was at UK from 2002 to 2005.

Stoops' Troops Still Trying To Find Rhythm

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky's offense got the jump before the Wildcats' defense had the last word during Saturday's first scrimmage at Commonwealth Stadium.

With two weeks remaining before the season opener against Western Kentucky, first-year coach Mark Stoops lamented that his team is still not where it should be at this point.

UK Men Will Have No Road Trip To Tennessee This Season

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — For the first time in over six decades, the Kentucky Wildcats will not travel to Knoxville to take on the Volunteers.

Although the Southeastern Conference hasn't released its complete 2013-14 schedule, Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin confirmed Tuesday that the Volunteers would face Kentucky only once and that it would be at Rupp Arena. Tennessee's 247 Sports site first reported the news.

This will mark the first time since 1952-53 that Kentucky hasn't played a regular-season game at Tennessee.

Stoops Excited To Finally Be Practicing

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Mark Stoops says he’s glad to be off the so-called banquet circuit and that it’s now time to get down to what he was really hired to do, coach football at the University of Kentucky.  Stoops, defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot, and offensive coordinator Neal Brown took turns answering questions during media day at Commonwealth Stadium, which immediately preceded the opening of fall camp.

Board Approves Churchill Downs Expansion Plans

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Churchill Downs is planning to add nearly 2,400 seats and a VIP hospitality lounge as part of a $14.5 million project at the home of the Kentucky Derby.

The Grandstand Terrace project was approved this week by the board of the racetrack's parent company.

Churchill officials said Tuesday the new venue will be ready in time for the Derby and the Kentucky Oaks next May.

The Grandstand Terrace will add second- and third-floor seating and will expand and update betting windows, concessions and restrooms.

Former Wildcat Center Noel's Rehab Going Well

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Former Kentucky center Nerlens Noel's injured knee is progressing well and he's looking forward to playing again "as soon as possible."

 

The 6-foot-10 Noel is recovering from a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, though that didn't prevent the Philadelphia 76ers from acquiring the sixth overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in last month's NBA draft.

Prolific Sire Unbridled's Song Dead At 20

LEXINGTON, Ky.-- Unbridled's Song, the son of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled who went on to capture a Breeders' Cup race and become a prolific sire, died Friday. He was 20.

Taylor Made Stallions, where the horse stood his entire career, said in a statement a large and inoperable mass was discovered in his sinus cavities and around the optic nerves. The horse began showing acute neurological symptoms Thursday and was euthanized.

Stoops: Fans Will "Show Up In Droves" If UK Wins

HOOVER, Ala. -- Mark Stoops thinks Kentucky fans are "starving" for the chance to celebrate and support a good football team at a school primarily known for basketball.  The key word being good.

"If we put a good product on the field, something the whole state's proud of, they'll show up in droves," Stoops said Wednesday at Southeastern Conference media days. "I'm not even worried about that. It's been evident thus far with how the fans support football.

"I think in Kentucky there's a rabid fan base."

UK Tailback Josh Clemons Out For The Season

Josh Clemons will likely miss the entire 2013 season with an achilles heel injury. He was hurt for most of the 2012 season with a knee injury as well.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Some bad news for the UK football Wildcats, sophomore running back Josh Clemons is out for the upcoming season with an Achilles heel injury. 

“We are extremely disappointed for Josh because he has worked so hard and come so far,” Coach Mark Stoops said in an official release. “He ran well during the spring and was eager to contribute this season. We are hopeful for a full recovery and look forward to his return to the field.”
