FRANKFORT, Ky. — A former University of Kentucky basketball star whose jersey hangs in the rafters of Rupp Arena has reached a plea deal with prosecutors in a government corruption case that would put him in prison for some two years.

Richie Farmer, the sweet-shooting guard for a UK team dubbed "The Unforgettables" for their gutsy play, launched a political career that came crashing down during a bid for lieutenant governor two years ago when complaints began to surface about his management of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

Farmer's Trial Delayed Until October

FRANKFORT, Ky.-- Richie Farmer's federal trial on charges of misappropriating government resources when he was agriculture commissioner has been moved to this fall.

Farmer, who starred on the University of Kentucky basketball team in the late 1980s and `90s, had asked that the trial, previously set for July 2, be continued until February. His lawyer, Guthrie True, said he needed more time to prepare for what he expected to be a complex case.

Farmer Pleads Not Guilty To Federal Charges

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky sports hero turned politician Richie Farmer pleaded not guilty Thursday to criminal charges related to his management of the Department of Agriculture.

The basketball icon whose jersey hangs from the rafters of the University of Kentucky's Rupp Arena was charged in an indictment earlier this week with four counts of misappropriating government property and money and one count of soliciting property in exchange for a government grant.
