LEXINGTON, Ky. - Despite persistently high cancer rates, Kentucky has been one of only 16 states been without a National Cancer Institute designated center, but an announcement Friday at the University of Kentucky Healthcare changed that.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky's cancer center received a significant boost in status Friday by winning designation as a National Cancer Institute facility, giving the Bluegrass state new clout in its fight against stubbornly high cancer rates.

The prestigious title for the UK Markey Cancer Center in Lexington brings with it the potential for millions of dollars in additional research funding. The designation means its patients will have access to new drugs, treatment options and clinical trials offered only at NCI centers.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky’s Markey Cancer Center held its annual Cancer Research Day on Monday.  Over 140 posters lined the halls of UK’s Singletary Center, highlighting recent research.

Director Mark Evers says Markey should hear word soon regarding its application to the National Cancer Institute for designation as Kentucky’s first and only national cancer center.

Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear joined the University of Kentucky’s Dr Mary Lynne Capilouto to introduce a new tool designed to dispense health care information to women who may not otherwise receive it.
