UK Fans Lining Up For Madness Tix

Lexington, KY – Some die hard U-K Basketball fans are once again taking up residence outside Memorial Coliseum to get their hands on Big Blue Madness tickets. Hundreds of fans have been pitching their tents and waiting for the ticket giveaway which doesn't even happen until early Saturday morning.

Fourth Case of West Nile Detected

Lexington, KY – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has confirmed a fourth case of West Nile Virus activity. Health Department spokesman Kevin Hall says this one was detected earlier this week.

So far this year, West Nile Virus has been found in two birds and one other mosquito. There have been no reports of human infection.

LRC Director To Get Big Raise

Frankfort, KY – Legislative Research Commission Director Bobby Sherman makes almost 133-thousand dollars a year. But his bosses, House and Senate leaders, are upping his annual salary to 195-thousand dollars. However, the vote was not unanimous. Five democratic leaders, including House Speaker Jody Richards, voted no. The timing is not good at all because we've asked other people to sacrifice and not have an appreciable salary increase.

Kentucky State Parks To Celebrate National Public Lands Day

Lexington, KY – Kentuckians are being encouraged to spend part of their weekend volunteering while also enjoying the great outdoors. Saturday is National Public Lands Day. Kentucky Department of Parks spokesman Gil Lawson says nine Kentucky State Parks are holding special NPL events this weekend. A complete list of activities in Kentucky is available at parks.ky.gov.

Four Kentucky Schools Get Sustainability Grades

Lexington, KY – An environmental watchdog group is out with a new report grading the sustainability efforts of three hundred U-S colleges including four here in Kentucky. The Massachusetts-based Sustainable Endowments Institute evaluates the schools on how well they live up to their green promises.

An Eyewitness To Ike's Devastation

Lexington, KY – Kentuckians continue to clean up from the remnants of Hurricane Ike which swept through the region last week, leaving thousands in Kentucky without electricity. "Ground Zero" of that storm was Galveston, Texas, where over 45,000 evacuees are still unable to return to their homes. Bryan Bartlett spke by phone to one Galveston homeowner who got the chance to return to the island over the weekend.

UK Seeing Green Today

Lexington, KY – The Second annual Sustainability Showcase is taking place in the student center grand ballroom.

The day-long expo features guest speakers, panel discussions, movies, and some two dozen green information booths. UK student Amanda Caldwell is volunteering with a group that's conducting a unique clothing drive.


Caldwell says the 500 pairs of denim collected will be converted into some 16-hundred square feet of insulation that's enough to equip an average-sized house.

PSC To Conduct Review Of Utility Company Outage Procedures

Louisville, KY – Statewide, more than half a million people were left without electricity following the September 14 windstorm. PSC spokesperson Andrew Melnykovych says it's basic procedure to investigate such a unique event.

Clearly it's an event that has never occurred before, at least not in anybody's lifetime and it one of those occurrences you need to try to learn from, because obviously there are lessons in it.
