Survey Shows Diminishing Support For Coal

Lexington, KY – As Governor Beshear's administration works to draft a comprehensive energy policy for the Commonwealth, a new survey out this month shows Kentuckians prefer the state move away from coal as its primary energy source and explore wind and solar power instead. The national survey was conducted earlier this month by the non-partisan Civil Society Institute.

Fourth Case of West Nile Detected

Lexington, KY – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has confirmed a fourth case of West Nile Virus activity. Health Department spokesman Kevin Hall says this one was detected earlier this week.

So far this year, West Nile Virus has been found in two birds and one other mosquito. There have been no reports of human infection.

LRC Director To Get Big Raise

Frankfort, KY – Legislative Research Commission Director Bobby Sherman makes almost 133-thousand dollars a year. But his bosses, House and Senate leaders, are upping his annual salary to 195-thousand dollars. However, the vote was not unanimous. Five democratic leaders, including House Speaker Jody Richards, voted no. The timing is not good at all because we've asked other people to sacrifice and not have an appreciable salary increase.

Kentucky State Parks To Celebrate National Public Lands Day

Lexington, KY – Kentuckians are being encouraged to spend part of their weekend volunteering while also enjoying the great outdoors. Saturday is National Public Lands Day. Four Kentucky Schools Get Sustainability Grades

Lexington, KY – An environmental watchdog group is out with a new report grading the sustainability efforts of three hundred U-S colleges including four here in Kentucky. The Massachusetts-based Sustainable Endowments Institute evaluates the schools on how well they live up to their green promises.
