KY Secretary Of State's Office Moves To Dispel Voter Rumors, Misconceptions

Louisville, KY – One of the most common rumors involves electioneering, or campaigning too close to a polling place. It's illegal to actively campaign within 300 feet of a polling place, but Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Les Fugate says it's not against the law to wear campaign attire to the polls, as long as it doesn't create a diversion.

State Launches New Prescription Drug Program

Frankfort, KY – For good will, promotion and advertising, some drug companies offer free or low-cost prescription drugs to those who can't afford them. But it's often difficult for consumers to figure out how to get the drugs. Governor Beshear says that won't be the case under the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. "We're going to buy computer software that will allow the user to locate, link and enroll in these assistance programs."

Beshear Says State Economy Faces "Ominous Future"

Frankfort, KY – First, Governor Beshear wants a new revenue projection from the Consensus Forecasting Group. Second, the administration will formulate a plan to address the shortfall and third he will take the plan to the people. He says a special session may be necessary during the January recess of the 2009 General Assembly. "Really, with December having Christmas and the holidays in it, it almost dictates that we end up doing a special session, if we have one, in January."

Natural Gas Prices Going Up This Winter

Louisville, KY – Most of the natural gas that will be used this winter was purchased and stored in the summer, during a price spike. That was caused by a rush on Wall Street to purchase commodities, which seemed safe in an uncertain market.

Kentucky Public Service Commission spokesperson Andrew Melnykovych says the same uncertain market may protect prices from another spike next year.

KY Sec. Of State: "We're Ready For Election"

Frankfort, KY – There are 3,550 precincts in Kentucky, with 2,800 polling locations. On Election Day, almost 15,000 poll workers will staff them. Secretary of State Trey Grayson is expecting long lines.

"If you're in line at 6:00 p.m., you can vote no matter how long that takes. We have seen in the past couple of years, those lines have been an hour to an hour-and-a-half, to two hours long, with that many people standing in line at 6:00 p.m.," Grayson said.
