KY Sec. Of State: "We're Ready For Election"

Frankfort, KY – There are 3,550 precincts in Kentucky, with 2,800 polling locations. On Election Day, almost 15,000 poll workers will staff them. Secretary of State Trey Grayson is expecting long lines.

"If you're in line at 6:00 p.m., you can vote no matter how long that takes. We have seen in the past couple of years, those lines have been an hour to an hour-and-a-half, to two hours long, with that many people standing in line at 6:00 p.m.," Grayson said.

Education Grants Announced

Lexington, KY – One, from the National Science Foundation, provides 12.5 million dollars to universities for research in biotechnology, nanotechnology and cyber-technology. The University of Kentucky will be one of the main beneficiaries along with the University of Louisville. Beshear calls the grants a welcome investment into Kentucky's future.

UK Secures 10.5 Million From NIH To Study Obesity's Link To Diabetes And Heart Disease

Lexington, KY – Dr. Lisa Cassis, of the Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences is leading the research at UK. She says the grant is important to the state because Kentucky ranks in the top 10 in all three categories.

First Lady Jane Beshear Helps Keeneland Hold Inaugural Pink Day Event

Lexington, KY – Several Kentucky women's health organizations are teaming up with First Lady Jane Beshear's Horses and Hope program to promote October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.


In addition to information booths and a Horses and Hope feature race for fillies, Beshear says Pink Day activities include free screenings for track workers and their families.

UK Opera Theatre's HQ To Get Makeover

Lexington, KY – The former Koinonia (Ko-ih-no-nia) House, which has been renamed the Schmidt Vocal Arts Center will feature more studios and practice rooms plus a rehearsal and dance studio for students and faculty, something that is badly needed according to opera theatre student, Reginald Smith. UK Opera Director Dr. Everett McCorvey says the new center will also be available to local groups.The project is expected to be completed by this time next year.

Derby Winner Coming Home To KY

Lexington, KY – John Nicholson, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park, says American racing fans are grateful for the gift of one of the Saudi king's favorite horses. Alysheba will take up residence in the stall formerly occupied by another Horse of the Year, John Henry, who died one year ago. The public is invited to a welcome home reception scheduled for 1:15 p-m, October 31st at the Kentucky Horse Park Hall of Champions.
