New Program To Care For Abandoned Horses

Lexington, KY – Ellen Hamilton is the manager of equine education at the Kentucky Horse Park. She says that the bad economy is largely responsible for the swelling numbers of horses being turned into the Humane Center. Cindy Ruleman on the Board of Directors had first come to the division with the problem .

Vaccine Shortage Likely To Continue

Lexington, KY – On Monday, U-S Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that supplies from the manufacturer are not currently where officials intended for them to be. In Kentucky, state epidemiologist Dr. Kraig Humbaugh says he hopes health departments can make do with what they have on hand.

KY Supco Hears Arguments In Domain Name Case

Frankfort, KY – An appellate court says domain names are not gambling devices as defined by Kentucky law and therefore not subject to forfeiture. But attorney Eric Lycan, arguing for the state, disagrees. "It is property. A domain name is property that can be seized and can be executed upon."

KY Senate Republicans Have A Big Decision To Make

Frankfort, KY – Senate leaders have done a good job of keeping Sen. Kelly's resignation as majority leader quiet. He resigned two weeks ago, but word is just now trickling out.

For now, Kelly remains a senator, but it's no secret he hopes Gov. Beshear will soon appoint him to a vacant circuit judgeship.

Smoking Cessation Program Still Unfunded

Frankfort, KY – Two years ago, Rep. John Will Stacy sponsored legislation creating a comprehensive smoking cessation program that included counseling and medications. But the state has never funded the program, which covers 285-thousand smokers on Kentucky Medicaid. Dr. Jon White of the Kentucky Medical Association says it's an untenable situation because the program, if funded, could save lives and money. "That's sound policy from a healthcare and fiscally responsible perspective."

Gaming Amendments Proposed

Frankfort, KY – Late Tuesday afternoon, reporters gathered at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington for a meeting between horse industry leaders and Senate President David Williams and Sen. Damon Thayer. During the two-hour, closed-door session, Williams outlined his proposed constitutional amendment on expanded gambling. Williams says the measure will prevent any expansion of gambling in Kentucky without a vote of the people.
