The number of people in Kentucky without health insurance fell 5.8 percent last year, the largest drop of any state in the country according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Kentucky Republicans are questioning the need for Kentucky health insurance exchange, known as Kynect, in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling keeping federal subsidies in place for plans purchased through both state or federal exchanges.

For Kentuckians unaware of penalties for failing to sign up for health insurance, opening their taxes this year could be a rude awakening. That’s why Gov. Steve Beshear has announced he’s adding an additional sign-up window between March 2 and April 30 for last-minute customers.

The deadline to obtain new health coverage through the state’s exchange, known as Kynect, is fast approaching. Those interested in signing up for coverage that would start next month have until December 15 to select a new plan, though open enrollment continues until February. 

While Governor Steve Beshear is focused on the 2014 open enrollment for Kynect, Republicans have their eye on 2017.

Second Open Enrollment For Kynect Starts Saturday
