Democrats To Bash McConnell Early And Often At Louisville Dinner

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Kentucky Democrats were set Thursday to take aim at Republican Mitch McConnell, the U.S. Senate minority leader they hope to oust in next year's election, though they don't yet have a challenger lined up.

Attorney General Jack Conway, the emcee at the annual Wendell Ford Dinner in Louisville, said he expects McConnell "will be mentioned several times" in speeches to hundreds of Democrats who will gather at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Kentucky Man Admits To Secretly Recording McConnell

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A Kentucky man has admitted to secretly recording a private campaign meeting between Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and his aides earlier this year.

Curtis Morrison of Louisville made the admission Friday in a first-person account posted on Salon.com, where he also said an assistant U.S. attorney has notified his attorney that a grand jury will consider bringing charges next Friday.

Conservative Kentucky Group Joins Lawsuit Against IRS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A conservative Kentucky group that was targeted by the IRS last year is now suing the agency and the federal government.

The Kentucky 9/12 Project, with help from the American Center for Law and Justice, is joining  conservative groups from other states in filing suit.

Former Miss America Unhappy With GOP Attack

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Former Miss America Heather French Henry has voiced her displeasure with a GOP statement calling her a "bottom-of-the-barrel pick" to run for U.S. Senate against Republican Mitch McConnell.

French Henry said in a blog post on Wednesday that she'll make a decision on the race soon.

Republican Party of Kentucky spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper made the statement about French Henry last week when she announced that she is considering taking on McConnell.

Strategy Could Give Grimes Shot At U-S Senate

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes could be a strong challenger in next year's U.S. Senate race if she runs as a Washington outsider against both Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and President Barack Obama.

University of Kentucky political scientist Ernie Yanarella said if Grimes decides to get into the race she will have to set herself apart from Obama, particularly on the coal industry that has proven so influential in Kentucky politics.

McConnell Unveils Measure To Help Coal Industry

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has unveiled legislation aimed at forcing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to expedite the process for coal companies seeking permits to open new mines.

McConnell told about 100 people gathered inside a mining equipment sales shop in Pikeville that he intends to file the legislation next week in response to thousands of jobs that have been lost in the Kentucky coalfields.

Beshear Reiterates He Won't Be Taking On McConnell

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Gov. Steve Beshear says he won't run against U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell despite encouragement from lots of people do so.

Beshear told reporters at a Capitol press conference Monday that Democratic leaders continue to urge him to run next year. But the second-term governor reiterated he won't seek election to any other office.

Liberal Group Blasts McConnell For Pro-Gun Stance

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A liberal political group is using an al-Qaeda recruitment video in a TV ad attacking Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell on his pro-gun stance.

Americans United for Change is spending only $5,000 to run the spot on three Lexington TV stations. But it drew a stern rebuke from McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton.
